The Japan Aikido Association uses 17 basic techniques  (Junana hon Kata) to teach basics.   More complicated applications generally build from these basic 17, these techniques are also used for belt promotions.

Atemi Waza (Striking Techniques)

1. Shomen ate---------------------Frontal (forward) strike

2. Aigamae ate--------------------Symmetric (matching) stances strike

3. Gyakugamae ate--------------Asymmetric (opposing) stances strike

4. Gedan ate-----------------------Low position strike

5. Ushiro ate----------------------Rear (behind) strike

Hiji Waza (Elbow Techniques)

6. Oshi Taoshi--------------------Push down

7. Ude gaeshi----------------------Arm outward twist/entanglement

8. Hiki taoshi---------------------Pull down

9. Ude hineri----------------------Arm twist

10. Waki gatame----------------Side arm lock

Tekubi Waza (Wrist Techniques)

11. Kote hineri------------------Wrist inward twist

12 Kote gaeshi------------------Wrist outward twist

13. Tenkai kote hineri-------Spinning wrist/forearm outward twist

14. Shiho nage------------------Four direction throw

Uki Waza (Floating Tecniques)

15. Mae otoshi-----------------Frontal drop

16. Sumi otoshi---------------Corner drop

17. Hiki otoshi----------------Pulling drop
